We’re popping champagne at Twilio HQ in congratulation of our friends at GroupMe, who just announced their acquisition by Skype.

This is a huge win for their team of twenty, the New York startup scene, and the global community of Twilio developers.

From Hackathon to Acquisition in Just One Year

We first met cofounders Steve Martocci and Jared Hecht at the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon in New York just over one year ago.  In that short time they built Groop.ly (later renamed) a service that we, and all of GroupMe’s other customers, use to keep in touch.  From inception, Groupme has been simple and useful, and we’re delighted that Steve and Jared’s vision and execution has resulted in an exciting new step for their team.

Check out this video we shot with a handheld of their first live demo at the TechCrunch Disrupt hackathon:

This is precisely why started Twilio.  We believed then and we believe now that if we open up this black box of communications to web developers, incredible things will happen.

GroupMe’s story is a stunning validation of that idea.  It is a promise of the possibility of how a weekend Twilio project can turn into a real business with a limitless horizon. This acquisition is proof that the combination of great entrepreneurs, great execution, a huge market, and Twilio’s technology is truly magical.

Who will be the next huge Twilio success story?  I hope it is you.
